| The Community Service Form |
[Dec. 8th, 2005|12:08 pm] |
Everytime you finish a community service opportunity, it is required that you fill out a CS Form to validate that you completed your hours. Do not forget that it must be signed by the Supervisor/Coordinator of the community service event that you participated in. Also, note down the name and contact information of the Community Service Organization's representative. For example, if you go on a Corazon de Vida trip, you would have the form signed by the Trip Leader. Or, if you are working for Adopt-a-Pumpkin, you would have the form signed by one of the Mentors in the Community Service Committee.
You need Adobe Acrobat Reader (it's free) to download the CS form: http://honors.ucr.edu/files/CS_Form.pdf

| Corazon de Vida |
[May. 9th, 2005|08:31 pm] |
There is an upcoming Corazon de Vida trip on MAY 21. If you would like to go on the trip, reserve your seat by emailing trips@corazondevida.org, with the following information in the body of the email:
Your name That you want to go with the UCR group on 5/21
A $25 donation is asked to help pay the cost of the bus. You must also have with you a valid US ID, like a driver's license or US passport. The ability to speak spanish is not a requirement, so do not worry about that. The purpose of the trip is to bring enough food to make them lunch for the day, to bring arts and crafts for the orphans, and also just to spend some time with these underprivileged children. We depart from Lot 24 (by the police station) by 5:45 AM, and usually return around 5 or 6 PM the same day. Going on only one trip will satisfy the 10 hour requirement for the learning contract, but I hope that you will continue to support Corazon throughout the quarter. Email soon because space is limited.
Upcoming trips are as follows, but are subject to change: May 21st, June 18th, July 16th, August 20th, September 17th, October 15th and November 19th.
If you have any other questions, please email Justin Rausa at jraus001@student.ucr.edu |

| Hand in Hand |
[Apr. 30th, 2005|09:24 am] |
Hand in Hand has been very busy preparing for AID Kenya week, May 2-May 6.
The objective of this week is to raise awareness about AIDS while fundraising money to build orphan sanctuaries in Kenya for children who have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic. As one of our main fundraising events, we will be putting together a quilt made up of squares sponsored by businesses, organizations and individuals. When the quilt is finished, it will be flown to Kenya along with the raised funds, to hopefully be hung in one of the orphanages as a visual display of all the people who are supporting these children. WE NEED YOU to help us sell some of our quilt squares in A&I. We're going to be setting up a table by the fishbowl in front of the cafeteria during the dinner hours, from 5:00-7:00pm (just like Adopt-A-Pumpkin).
Please sign up at the Honors Office front counter for a shift.
Please direct any questions to Shelley Yee - handinhanducr@yahoo.com Or Justin Rausa - justin.rausa@email.ucr.edu |

| HAND IN HAND |
[Apr. 24th, 2005|09:05 am] |
Hand in Hand is a student organization at UCR dedicated to serving the underserved. We have recently been contacted by the University of Redlands to help with Rotary International's "Quarters for Kenya" project, which aims to increase AIDS awarenes while raising $250,000 for building sanctuaries for Kenyan orphans who have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic. As Hand in Hand would like to help Rotary raise as much money as possible for this noble cause, we now turn to our fellow service organizations at UCR to join us in our efforts. We will be having an informational meeting on Monday, April 25th at 6:30pm in Terrace Room C. At this meeting, you can learn more about Rotary International, the efforts already underway at the University of Redlands, and the fundraising project that Hand in Hand is planning. Most importantly, though, you will have the opportunity to find out how you can do your part in supporting the Kenyan orphans. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at handinhanducr@yahoo.com. I truly hope that I will have the chance to meet you in person at our meeting, and I especially look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with you in fulfilling this humanitarian cause. Sincerely, Shelley Yee Director of Volunteers and Events, Hand in Hand

| RELAY FOR LIFE |
[Apr. 24th, 2005|09:04 am] |
Need community service for spring quarter?
Here's a great way to get it...RELAY FOR LIFE
So here's the deal. We get a team together (this is where you guys come in). On May 14th, the team goes down to Ramona High School to participate in a 24 hour relay (that means we are out there from the morning of the 14th to the morning of the 15th). At least one member of the team has to be on the track at all times during the 24 hours. We spend the night in tents and wake up to a wonderful pancake breakfast (which our team will be helping to coordinate) in the morning. Now, you don't have to be out there for all 24 hours. You can come out and participate for as long as you wish. But really, it is an amazing experience. Pretty much you get to just hang out with friends the whole time and there are activities planned to keep you guys busy. We had a good time last year and hope that all you guys will come out to make it just as fun this year.
If you're interested in participating, email me back and let me know. This is a fundraising event...all of the money that we raise goes straight to the American Cancer Society to aid in finding a cure for cancer. So the more money we raise, the better. We will be setting up tables (Adopt-a-Pumpkin style) at A&I and commons in the coming weeks. If you want to get some community service that way, email me with days and times that you will be available. I will hold a team meeting some time within the next two weeks.
You can come to the meeting with no obligation to join the team. Just come to hear what Relay is all about.

If you're looking for a fun and easy way to get those hours then look no further than Young @ Heart.
The group meets on Saturdays from in Lot 24 (By the Police Station and Amy S. Harrison Field) at 12:45 and then carpools over to the nearby Sunrise Retirement Center and stays until 3pm. Whether your giving a nice old lady a manicure, playing BINGO in the dining hall or just sitting down with someone and having a chat, you'll find yourself having so much fun that you won't want to leave after the short 2 hour weekly visits. Along with our regular visits we also have really great holiday parties that are a blast not only for the residents but for us as well, just ask anyone who was at the Halloween party and they'll tell you the same. Please contact Gregory S. Meeh at gmeeh001@student.ucr.edu for more information. |

| UHP Community Service Committee |
[Jan. 31st, 2005|07:36 pm] |
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: Because it wanted to make Valentine's Day Cards for the needy! -----------------------------
Your Community Service Committee is sponsoring a Valentine's Day Card Making Drive. Just drop by the Honors Office any day of next week (2/07-2/11), and make Valentine's Day Cards for those living in the Grand Terrace Assisted Living Facility for a minimum of one hour intervals. We will have sign in/sign out sheets closely guarded by Angela Esteron- so you must check in and check out with her to receive community service credit for your card-designing abilities. If you do choose to participate in the event, please put forth your best effort; these cards will be distributed to individuals in need of special attention, so the thought DOES count.
If you would also like to distribute the cards the Saturday (2/12) of that week from 2-4PM, I will see if I can get you rides there. If you would like to drive there on your own, please make sure to check in with an honors peer mentor upon arrival.
These hospice patients are terminally ill and live in the "Grand Terrace Assisted Living Facility" and its right on Barton Avenue (Taking 215 N from the 60 - less than 10 minutes from campus).

Dear Students, Because many of you are looking for ways to become involved in your community, Hand in Hand would like to invite you to join us in our service efforts. Hand in Hand is a new student organization here at UCR whose ultimate purpose is to serve the underserved. With the intention to provide community services to people in need (including, but not limited to, the homeless, the abused, and victims of natural disasters), Hand in Hand is designed to give compassionate students the opportunity to take a part in these goals while also gaining an invaluable sense of responsibility and achievement. Hand in Hand's primary ongoing activity is working at Project Food--a program at the First Congregational Church in Riverside that provides food to the homeless every Wednesday between 3:00 and 7:00pm. In addition to Project Food, it is our hope that we can coordinate our efforts with other established organizations in order to meet the needs of our community through special projects with Ronald McDonald House, the San Bernardino Blood Bank, and tsunami/hurricane relief as well. The ways in which we can better serve our community are endless. If you are interested in signing up to volunteer at Project Food, or would just like more information about our organization, please feel free to contact us at handinhanducr@yahoo.com, and we will be more than happy to answer your questions and/or add you to our growing list of volunteers.
